March Madness Trend Bracket

Elle Decor and House Beautiful have teamed up to create a fun bracket for designers. I am not big into basketball and many other designers have expressed how this is “My kind of March Madness”.

The Trend Tournament can be found on both Elle Decor and House Beautiful’s Facebook pages. Today the Tournament begins. Today the competing trends are leopard print and lace. I voted for lace, follow the Trend Tournament on Facebook through Elle Decor and House Beautiful to cast your vote. This Trend Tournament is just for fun for those who enjoy design.

Here is my bracket:

March Madness, Interior Design, Design Bracket, Trend Tournament, fun competition

March Madness, Interior Design, Design Bracket, Trend Tournament, fun competition

How well do you think I will do? We will have to wait and see.

Seeking Experience

Shelia Wener defined internship as; Experience, Deciding what you like, Course Correction, Networking and an opportunity to have a job after graduation with a higher paying salary.

I have been thinking about internships since my Senior Year of High School. In a way my Internship plan has not changed that much. I was looking at areas outside of where I lived that would be convenient for me to pursue a career in Interior Design. I still am looking for internships where I can make reasonable living and transportation arrangements while pursuing my desire to become an Event Manager for Design Market shows, this will be a little trickier considering I don’t know of any living arrangements that would be reasonable where a market show takes place.

I was involved in Drama in high School, I remember going to a big audition in the big city, and although I did not feel satisfied with my performance I had learned that auditions were all about experience and eventually you will score a job! Auditions are Job Interviews. Job Interviews are all about experience, learning and preparing yourself for the job. http://www.jobinterviewquestions.org/http://www.jobinterviewquestions.org/ is a website that helps those who are in the market for a job (or an internship) be able to find a job, how to act during an interview, what the appropriate questions are to ask your interviewer. The site is helpful for specific types of interviews, where to find the job you are looking for and how to resign from your current job.

Remember to treat your first job and your internship like Grad School, keep in mind you may not get paid a lot but you will gain some great experiences. Always be looking for great job opportunities and internships.

This will be my last post for the weekend. Please keep your eyes open for experiences.

Is it Your Work?

Tags

Plagiarism is unoriginal, unethical and will never enhance your creative abilities. Even if you use plagiarism to get yourself a great job, I guarantee there will be a time where you will not be able to use someone elses work, you will be looked down upon when others notice the quality of “Your” work has gone down or your style differs from what you have previously presented.

Shane Cole taught that Ethics is what is morally good and morally bad. The idea of plagiarism was brought to pass in 1716 when Facts, Ideas and names are being copied without permission. Queen Anne had a Law that a work belonged to the author for 14 years after they had produced their work.

copyrighting is how we can prevent plagiarism. A copyright is any original work that is fixed in a tangible form (If you were to copy this very blog post you would be a plagiarist violating my person copyright, I own the rights to this blog).

You can evaluate whether you are plagiarizing someone or not by asking yourself what purpose are you using this article and for not claiming it as your own. Understanding the Nature of your source, determining how much of someone elses work you will be using while correctly siting your source, and evaluating whether the example you correctly credited to the author is a positive effect on your market and the authors market go ahead and promote an author! I would love if all of you would promote me and my blog as long as you gave me the proper credit.

My Teacher, Ward Hicks encouraged me to Join PRSSA(Public Relation Skills and Activities). This is an organization designed for students who are interested in Public Relations (Which is my area of study, with my focus on Event Management). PR is designed to enhance writing and editing skills, expand our knowledge of how to resource, be able to be a part of media planning (another area of interest for me) learn the importance of evaluation, be able to strategically think, receive opportunity to program, produce special events etc.

PRSSA helps students find a job or internship, offers awards and scholarship, provides travel opportunities creates affiliation with the PRSA (The non-student version of PRSSA) and offers local chapter activities. For more information you can go to prssa.org

From Micheal Cannon I learned that PR is also Performance Recognition. Public Relations is a broad area for career options, you are able to go into just about anything such as Advertising, Events (Yay!), Journalism, Media Planning etc.

As I mentioned in an earlier post My teacher said that with PR you can go into just about anything, so I can very well use PR to break into the Interior Design Industry Marketing Interior Design in a newly perceived way.

The Office to Enhancing your Business

Microsoft Office is a set of commonly used programs that are designed to help communicate with others. We use Microsoft Word to create documents that we can send to others. We use Powerpoint as a way to pitch an idea or create a learning presentation. We use Excel to display data and information. Microsoft Office is a universal program that the majority of todays world are familiar with and use on a regular basis.

My teachers, even as I was at a young age, valued the teaching of Microsoft Office. Microsoft Word was the program we used to type up our pieces we had written. I had a teacher that started teaching us in 4th grade how to use Powerpoint, he showed us how to be creative with Powerpoint as well.

Microsoft office produces material and sources such as; the windows phone, Skype, X-box and Bing. Microsoft continues to increase their market and sources every year.

Microsoft provides templates for items such as; invitations, Calendars and budget sheets in order to make life, business and events go smoother.

You can become a member of Office 365 at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ Office 365 allows you to access Microsoft Programs and is specifically designed to help enhance your productivity in your business. Office 365 also assists their members on how to use Microsoft Programs and how to use them effectively.

Microsoft is one of many tools that can give assistance in business, it is a common well understood method of communication and is fairly simple to use. I advise that you take advantage of the Office 365 Free Trial to test out how much Office can enhance the quality of your business. Let me know how Office 365 treats you!

The Way Life is Presented: Advertisement

Tags

In advertising there are 5 “P’s” we should consider; Product, Price, Place, Promotion and People. It is important that we make our advertisements appropriate for our audience, the area in which we advertise, we use the appropriate medium and the correct purpose of the advertisement. Beth Hendricks taught that Advertising brings Prices down. Advertising brings people to buy things they don’t want or need. to quote ‘Confessions of a Shopaholic’, “A store can open a lust for things you never knew you needed” such is the same with advertising.

Hendricks presented this video for communication students,

In Advertising the way you present is everything! Be creative, be appropriate and be convincing! Get the audience you want to see the appeal of what you are advertising! Stand out from the world.

I am currently working with the Rexburg Business Expo where we have been put in charge of advertising around town and campus. Today, we were revising a banner our group leader had designed, our advisor was dissatisfied with the outcome so I helped my classmate make the proper revisions to this banner. Issues included; the visibility to the public, creating a readable banner without being distracting or overwhelming, knowing where space is needed we knew some of the banner will be cut off by the frame it will be placed in so we had to create the appropriate space in order for people to see the banner clearly with no confusion.

http://www.aaf.org/ this is a website that you can join in order to improve your advertisement and the amount of viewers you will have on your advertisement. Members can receive awards and are informed of upcoming events (again something I would be very interested in seeing the action of these events).

I use Advertising in my daily life, this very blog is a method of advertisement for myself. I plan to use Advertising through my future career as an Event Manager. I will always need the name of my event to get out there and communicate with an appropriate audience! Advertisement is more than just a flyer, it’s how we live our lives. We know about products, services and places through advertisement whether that be through social media, word of mouth or actual flyers and posters. To live well, Advertise well.

Capturing Life through Images

Tags

I have always had a love for photography! I have never been camera-shy, even from a young age I was asking for people to take pictures of me. Since I was about 9 years old I  started to enjoy not only being in pictures but taking pictures as well. My mom trusted me with her camera because she enjoyed the perspective I was able to find. I took a photography class in High School, I learned more about how to work with my little point and shoot camera to mimic some of those effects that SLR cameras can capture. I am now working on getting a SLR camera so that I can capture some better quality images. I would like to be able to get one soon so I am able to take pictures of my sister for her High School Senior Pictures.

Caryn Esplin taught that life without images is a boring life. Visual communication is the fasted growing method of communication. Visual design includes; web design, photography, videography and Adobe Suite Programs. All visual design is used for communication. It is best to have a versatile skill set in the communications industry and in the visual communication field, I feel that I have become and have yet to become very well-rounded in the visual communications field considering my experience in the Interior Design program, growing up learning about graphic design from my mom and incorporating graphic design in the majority of my schooling, and my love for photography. I also enjoy critiquing others work.

Students who graduated have said that the #1 skill they felt they needed to have more experience in was visual media and then writing.

Infographics is when data is displayed in a visual way, this is the most shared method of communication. Pinterest is a great example of infographics, it can create information that may seem boring in an interesting way.

Visual Media has an E-S-V Factor which stands for Efficient, skilled and versatile. We need to make sure each of our visual projects create the E-S-V factor.

Esplin created a blog for to showcase her students photography. http://www.byuideanspics.com/ There are many great portraits, I love the panoramic shots and there were a few interesting pieces of furniture. I would love to do photography for Interior Design magazines or catalogs, maybe I can incorporate that as part of my goal of being an Event Manager at an Interior Design Market show.

Here is a an example of a piece of furniture perceived in an interesting perspective,

http://shawnhepworth.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/case.jpg This blog shows many photo editing techniques and the effectiveness of photography when photo editing is done well.

It’s a good idea to create a photography portfolio that anyone can easily access. When I get a better camera I will further showcase my photo capabilities for now I will have just have to showcase a few I took with a little point and shoot camera. Here are some student portfolios that focus on photography, http://emp.byui.edu/esplinc/comm347/p4samplesweb.htm

I have learned over the course of my studies that competition is a great way to get your name out there. My senior year of High School I designed a new formal dress out of an old wedding dress (well not that old) although I did not win the competition I was involved in (FCCLA STAR Events, Recycle and Redesign), I still got my name out there and people knew me as the girl who designed that awesome dress, people were viewing me as an extremely talented individual. Here is a picture of the before and after of the dress:

Recycle and Redesign, Competition, Recognition

Recycle and Redesign, Competition, Recognition

As you can see there were some drastic changes made to the dress, I took this dress in 10 sizes with the help of my marvelous teacher! The Design of the dress was all my idea! Students use this website, http://www.byuiphotographics.org/ to showcase their work in a competitive way, student photographers compete against each other to determine who will be showcased and rewarded on their website. Take every competition opportunity you get!

Photoshop is a great program! I have been familiar with Photoshop since I was very young. http://photoshopworld.com/ This website shows seminars, Photoshop professionals, learning opportunities and Photoshop events. There are some Mega Events with Photoshop, I would love to be in on these design events, I think I just want to do everything! I want to incorporate all my abilities and interests into my career, which most of my abilities and interests evolved around the planning process and design so I think I can get something figured out!

Here is some of my own photography, keep in mind I do not own a SLR Camera nor were any of these used with an SLR Camera. I still am dreaming of getting my own camera of professional quality.

Broadcast Journalism, Video Production and the Grand Challenge of finding the Perfect Internship!

Ron Weeks taught Communication students about video production and broadcast journalism. I have never really given much thought to the idea of video production, but my mom always was telling me that I should be an anchor woman. I love the camera! When I was 16 my family took a trip to the Discovery Gateway in Salt Lake City, Utah, they were featuring KSL5 News, My cousin and I took a picture pretending to be anchor women. My friend made a comment on the picture expressing how he could totally see me being a broadcaster one day.

KSL 5 News, Anchor Women, Broadcast Journalism

KSL 5 News, Anchor Women, Broadcast Journalism

There are many jobs that the Video Productions industry offers such as; Broadcast station, Corporate video, Government video, web videos and podcasts, Advertisement agencies, Directing, producing, editing, digital graphic design, sound design etc.

Broadcasting offers; News Directing, Producing, Editing, reporting, anchoring, writing, videography, backpack journalism, Local TV stations, Radio Stations, News Networks, Cable News and Internet job opportunities.

TV is still the primary source of news. Anyone can go into the film industry, it didn’t use to be this way. A guy from Provo Utah created the Sundance Film Festival in Park City Utah which changed the face of film forever. The Sundance Film Festival allowed for anyone to be a videographer rather than having to break into the industry through a relative.

Internships are important regardless if you go into video production or broadcast journalism or not. An Internship is like a first job, we learned from Weeks that we must treat our first job as Grad School. Your first job most likely will not pay well but you get a lot of great experience!

Brian Howard stressed the importance of internships because college really doesn’t count for much, it’s all about the portfolio and experience that will be the selling point for future employers.

Internships can be found at local TV and Radio stations This would be a good idea for me to get the inside scoop on success and failures of events and gather ideas for my own events I will plan in my future. Internships can be found all over the world, few will be paid and that’s okay. Internships provide networking opportunities and show future employers that you are serious about your career.

Although getting an internship at a local news station might be a great idea for me and I’m sure I would enjoy the events that go along with the internship, my dream internship is to intern for the Las Vegas Market exhibition for Interior Design.

Time: Planning Accordingly

Tags

I would like to share an awesome website that I was to read and evaluate for my Communications 100 course. This website is called timeanddate.com

It’s nearly midnight in Idaho but in Adelaide Australia It’s only 4:30pm! So why should this effect the way we look at business?

I have a family member who has lived outside the world for quite some time now, on rare occasions he would call and talk to me while I was visiting some other relatives. He would always call during the day and for him that was an obscure time.

timeanddate teaches how to connect with people from across the world at times that are most suitable to both parties. Often, in a profession you may have to communicate with another from across the world, you as a business person should know and respect their time. It is most important for you to cater to their time, timeanddate shows you what times of the day are reasonable for you to contact someone from across the world.

Also, if you are traveling in your profession it would be good to know the time changes in order to adapt your plans around the time that the community you are traveling of is aware of.

timeanddate not only shows the time around the world but also the weather, when the sun sets and rises. Environmental factors that we would want to be aware of that may differ from our own are included in this site. If you are a photographer traveling to the Middle East in order to capture the perfect picture of the sun rise, you should probably be aware of when the sun rises, in what weather conditions and be using the appropriate time to plan accordingly.

Time is precious. No one wants to waste their time or be inconvenienced by others not being aware of the environment in which they are associating with. Communicating across the world can be a great networking opportunity, however we will not impress those who we are communicating with if we are not considerate of their time. If we are not aware of time we may not be able to achieve our goals, we may miss opportunities.

timeanddate.com also had some fun apps such as; a calculator that tells you exactly how old you are in a measurement of time, A clock widget for blogs, clocks for your phone, a tool that allows you to plan events in a particular time pattern.

I highly suggest you check out timeanddate.com, play around on the website and use it as a tool to network appropriately with those who live across the world.

The Event of Blogging

Tags

, , , , , , ,

I started this blog the Summer of 2011, this was my first blog I ever created and I would consider this blog a success. I hope for a lot more traffic in the future. I was able to learn from Lane Williams a that Random blogging can get you a good job if the right people come across the blog. While my blog is not random but rather more geared to what I want in life I still feel that this blog could get me somewhere great if I play my cards right. I promote myself through Facebook and Twitter. I have networked with many Interior Designers and Communication directors through this blog and my twitter account.

Every student in my Communications 100 course was required to create a WordPress account, I had an advantage because I already had started my voyage. The Communication department knows that ALL students need web documentation. We have learned that all WordPress Documents need 3-4 tags in order to give the blog more views. So why WordPress? Well for one WordPress is commonly used and you can make your own website through WordPress. I also find WordPress professional and easier to look at the layout of a WordPress versus a distracting layout many bloggers use on other blog domains.

When blogging it is best to have a focused subject. Where my blog may seem to be a little bit of everything, my focus is the same. I want to incorporate Interior Design, Graphic Design and other Design in my Communication studies and future.

The average person spends 70 mins a day in News and Media. To be a better writer we should know what is going on in our community with an open-mind.

CONSUME NEWS through Social Media sites, Yahoo, Google, Local News, Blogs etc.

ap.org is a website where many current events are reported. There is a list of special events:

http://www.ap.org/products-services/special-events

These special events allow journalists to write about spectacular events such as the Grammys, Academy Awards, March Madness and something I’ve recently been reading about and even writing a paper on, Cannes Film Festival. These are events I would love to get involved in! There is always an exciting event going on and I’m so happy that I will be spending my life in one big event full of lots of events.

This website has a clear layout, it’s visually appealing and a reliable source. This may sound a little extreme but I will honestly not go to a source that I feel does not give off a professional or pleasing image. ap.org has that professional appeal. I cannot stress how important it is to create a professional, appropriate and visually appealing blog. Please do not chose distracting colors or busy patterns, do not create a confusing layout, make your posts easy to locate. Remember, anyone can create an abstract crazy confusing blog, it takes talent to create a professional and appealing image for not only your blog but yourself. Your blog becomes your identity.

Here is an example of how much easier it is to visually follow the layout of a well designed professional looking blog versus a blog that is just pure chaos. Look at the picture on the right, what is even going on there? What is the focus? If you were looking for professionalism which blog would you read over? This picture was found at;
